A member of the U.S. Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Tellez has produced some of the greatest track and field performers in the history of the sport.

In addition to coaching outstanding individual athletes, Tellez also had some successful teams during his 22 years as head coach at Houston. He led the men’s team to nine Top 10 showings at the NCAA indoor meet, including a fourth-place finish in 1996. He also guided UH to six Top 15 finishes at the NCAA outdoor meet. The UH men won the 1997 and 1998 indoor and outdoor Conference USA titles, as well as the 1977 and 1978 Southwest Conference indoor titles.

In addition to his success as UH’s men’s coach, Tellez also began the Lady Cougar program and led them to three Top 10 finishes at the NCAA Indoor Championships and eight Top 20 finishes at the NCAA Outdoor meet. Houston also won the 1983, 1984 and 1987 SWC indoor titles and the 1984 and 1990 SWC outdoor championships under his direction.

Before Houston, Tellez was an assistant coach at UCLA beginning in 1968. While at UCLA, he coached Dwight Stones, Mike Tully, Willie Banks and James Butts. In 1976, he was offered the chance to become the strength and conditioning coach for the Dallas Cowboys under Tom Landry. Instead, he opted to come to Hous­ton. In addition to his success at Houston, Tellez enjoyed tremendous success on the international circuit as well. Between 1984 and 1996, six of the seven United States sprinters who won Olympic Gold Medals were coached by Tellez and seven of the USA’s overall 13 medals were claimed by his athletes.

He was named the head coach for the 1991 U.S. national team that competed in the World Championships at Tokyo, Japan and was the head coach for the 1987 USA Pan American team. I created this website to put an end to the confusion that beginning mixed martial artists face. Some guys are creating websites that share techniques, drills and tips but without a well structured training system designed with the intent of building your skills from the ground up, there is absolutely no way that you will retain what they are showing. Training with an instructor to guide you along the way is crucial. However, jumping into a group class setting when you begin training isn't always the best way to learn.

Also, in a large group setting, an instructor is often forced to teach you things beyond your level because there are students with much more experience than you in the class as well.

Luckily I had connection.

My good friend and Australian team swimmer, Sam Ashby.

Using his network of Olympic swimmers and coaches, I managed to extract the steps to swimming perfect freestyle technique. One drill at a time.

I tested the program on my own swimmers first.

The results knocked me out of my chair.

"44 strokes per lap down to 32!" I'd never heard anything like it.

"What about your times?" I asked. "Are they any different?"

"I had a hard time getting under 45 seconds for a lap. Now I can do 35 seconds without even kicking."

This was silly!

"Are they having me on?" I wondered.

I counted their strokes and timed each of them to double check they were telling the truth.

Sure enough, they were telling the truth. We were on to something.

Times were dropping like world records after the Speedo Lazer suits were invented.

Swimmers were now conserving energy as they swam.

They were no longer sucking in water each breath.

Instead they were relaxed.Confident. Comfortable.

They swum with smooth even strokes that resembled the techniques of elite swimmers.

I wondered "Why has this not been released to the public before?".

We were fixing chronic issues with swimmers technique such as:

Dropped elbow in the arm recovery

Choking on water after each breath

'Fishtailing' like a zig-zagging snake

Weak kick that triathletes constantly battle with

Sinking feet which act like an anchor on your body

Wide and inefficient 'S' shaped pulling

Lack of rotation from the hips and shoulders

Struggling to breathe after a few laps

Slipping through the pull and not 'catching' the water

Instead the program was showing amazing results. I was seeing traits which I'd only ever seen in 'I-train-4-hours-a-day' swimmers.

Have a relaxed arm in the recovery and conserve energy rather than expend it

Breath comfortably so that you're never gasping for air again

Swim straight and avoid 'fishtailing' to wipe off seconds from swimming side-to-side

Kick so that your moving forward and can easily pick up the pace whenever you choose

Swim so 'high' in the water your body creates almost no resistance

Get back to basics and discover the correct way your pull should feel underwater so you won't be guessing if you're doing it the right way

Rotate easily from your hips to your shoulders and move through the water efficiently

Swim for hours by making one small change in your stroke (no more stopping at the end of each lap necessary!)

Grab the water and move through it easily and get rid of feeling like you're slipping with each pull through.

Feel confident in the water and never be swam over the top of again

See a change in your physique (flatter stomachs here we come!) and stand more upright now you'll be using the correct muscles in your swimming

I decided to give it my all and continued to train the conventional way I'd been taught by others. I added more time to my running schedule and ran more days a week than normal.  In fact, I ran every day.

I was pretty much overtraining… but that’s what the conventional running methods teach us.

You're probably thinking that I ended up shaving more than just those 12 minutes off my best marathon time.

WRONG!

All that extra effort resulted in the WORST marathon time I'd ever had!  I couldn't believe it.  After all my work, I was going backwards, not forwards!

Breaking my personal record became a mission.  But I didn't jump right back into training right away.  Six months later, I gave it another try. I started out running every single day and training the way my coaches and other marathon gurus had advised.  Two weeks into training I suffered a strained hamstring and ended up having to stop running for two whole weeks!

Frustrated doesn't even come close to the way I was feeling.  I wanted to be a better runner.  Not sit at home and heal an injury that was a result from the training I thought was going to help.

When I was finally able to get back to training, I admit I was afraid of injuring myself again.  To make sure that I gave my hamstring injury sufficient care, I only ran 4 days a week.  I made sure to rest it on off days to give my body time to build back up after working out.

I continued my training for 4 days a week and added one more thing.  When I tested my progress I was floored!

That One More Thing was the KEY that helped me beat my best
marathon time by a full 18 minutes!

I couldn't believe that "decreasing" the number of days I trained and "adding" just this one extra thing to my program improved my time so dramatically.  I was hooked and continued to train until I felt confident I could run a marathon at top form.

Like most runners, I have friends who also run.  They saw how well I was doing and asked for advice. So I started teaching them the program I was using to train.  Pretty soon I began teaching clients as well and saw how they progressed as much as I did.  Breaking personal record time became a goal that was suddenly reachable!

Let me ask you a question. If there was some very specific reason why you weren't improving with your game, would you want to know?

If a fitness trainer can't add value to their game (or yours), they're fired. That's it. No other way around it.
